A Thank You and Final Lesson Learned

There are many people that deserve thanks for contributing to my Local Election 2014 campaign, but above all, I have to thank my campaign team: Chris Hayes, Conor Kenny, and Elizabeth O'Reilly, who worked voluntarily for the last 6 months to support the campaign in every way imaginable. I credit their hard work with achieving the significant number of first preference votes we managed to accrue. Chris, Conor, and Elizabeth are all passionate young people who will hopefully all stand for election themselves some day and give me hope for our future political landscape.

I'd also like to thank my family for their support, especially my husband (Mark Hughes); 4 year old daughter; and my parents. Election campaigns are harder on the family than the candidate, and there is no doubt that my family sacrificed a lot over the last 6 months to support me on this adventure. For that, I will be forever grateful.

The Green Party deserves special thanks for allowing me to represent them in the Killiney-Shankill district. I'd particularly like to thank the Dun Laoghaire Green Party and Elizabeth and Rick Caldicott for nominating me and supporting me throughout the campaign. I'd also like to thank the Green Party Leadership, including Roderic O'Gorman and Catherine Martin, my fellow candidates (especially Tom Kivlehan, Celine Moorkins, Ossain Smyth, Miriam Hennessey, Suzanne McEneaney, Grace O'Sullivan, Caroline Conroy, Steven Matthews, Ross Brown, Ciaran Cuffe, David Healy, and Sandra Dunne), and the office team (Anna Conlan and Chris Green) for their mentorship and support. Most of all, a very special thank you goes out to Eamon Ryan for bringing me in to the party and encouraging me every step of the way. It was an honour to stand alongside all of these candidates in the local and European elections and I feel privileged to now call them friends.

I can't forget the incredible photographers that documented every step of the journey and have given me wonderful images to show my daughter when she's older: Peter Keane; John Pett; and David Cavanagh.

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who helped me with postering, leafleting, canvassing, babysitting, or donated to the campaign - They shall remain nameless to protect their political privacy, but the campaign would not have happened without their contributions. I only hope I can volunteer some of my time to their interests someday in return.

I undertook this campaign as much to learn about the process as to win. Having now experienced the local election process, my advice to anyone is to do the things that scare you - You will learn more than you can imagine about yourself and others, and it that sense, you will always win no matter what the outcome.

Very Best,

Cara
